THE TRANSIT ALLIANCE SUPPORTS THE TORONTO BOARD OF TRADE’S 4 TRANSIT FUNDING TOOLS

On the morning of March 18th, 2013, the Toronto Region Board of Trade announced its four funding strategies to help finance Metrolinx’s ‘The Big Move’ project. We are pleased to see that a regional sales tax was at the top of their list.
The Toronto Transit Alliance has always believed that a 1% regional sales tax is the best and most efficient option and should be the first step to funding subway and transit expansion across the region.

While all four transit funding options are important, a 1% sales tax must be dedicated exclusively to transit expansion and we recommend this as the first and most crucial step in creating long-term transit funding. It is time for politicians to stop posturing over policy issues and come together on a true workable funding solution.

We believe that transit funding must cross municipal boundaries in order to fund ‘The Big Move’ transit plan. It is time to stop drawing maps on the back of napkins, time to stop suggesting band aid solutions that won’t provide long-term sustainable transit funding. It is time for our politicians to stop posturing and using the transit expansion issue to launch partisan positioning, time to for all parties to come together and support a dedicated funding stream.
