Transit expansion was a priority today in Ontario as new GO stations were announced in West Toronto, in addition to expanded service in the Durham region.

Ontario announced four new stations in West Toronto that align with Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack plan. On the Kitchener GO corridor, two new stops will be added at St. Clair West and Liberty Village to help transit commuters in these areas. On the Barrie GO line, two new locations at Spadina and Front and Bloor and Lansdowne will be added to the GO Regional Express Rail (RER).

Additionally, the GO expansion will compliment SmartTrack as the four new stations will be part of the larger plan to provide city-wide access. “Today, we announced six SmartTrack and GO Regional Express Rail (RER) stations in the west end of Toronto, as well as up to twelve stops along the Eglinton West LRT extension,” said Tory in a statement. Between eight and 12 stops will be added between Mount Dennis and the Matheson Airport Corporate Centre in the Eglinton West extension project.

The SmartTrack plan provides options to vital areas such as the Markham Centre, the downtown financial district, and the airport. These stations, along with the rest of SmartTrack, is set to be running by 2023-2024. SmartTrack will also introduce electrification to core elements of the RER system in the GTHA.

Premier Kathleen Wynne also announced this week that Metrolinx will be extending GO service from Oshawa to Bowmanville, furthering transit options in the Durham region. The GO trains currently run from the Lakeshore East corridor and terminate in Oshawa. With the new service, the Lakeshare East rail corridor will extend 20 km to Bowmanville and build four new stations in between the two metropolitan areas. Metrolinx will work with CP Rail to use part of their existing corridor north of Highway 401 to build the new route.

The new transit corridors will provide further access for Ontario residents and give much-needed transit options into the core of Toronto. SmartTrack is becoming a reality and transit users should be excited to have increased mobility options.
